Kanal is a programmatic composition inspired by the transformation of a historic Citroën automobile factory in Brussels into a future international cultural hub. This piece, written for string orchestra, consists of two parts, each depicting different aspects of this ambitious project.
Originally, the Citroën factory was an industrial landmark, and the architects were tasked with preserving its monumental character while adapting it for a new cultural purpose. However, unforeseen challenges arose throughout the process, adding complexity to the endeavour.
From the very introduction, the music conveys the scale and difficulty of the project. The first part begins with a determined and optimistic main theme, symbolizing the vision and ambition behind the transformation. Yet, as obstacles emerge, moments of doubt and struggle are expressed through unison rests and intricate polyrhythms in the violins and cellos (4 against 3). Gradually, as challenges are resolved, the music transitions seamlessly into the second part, evoking a sense of warmth and belonging—like stepping into a welcoming new space.
The second part celebrates the beauty and diversity of the building’s newly designed spaces. The museum, auditoriums, and public areas—such as the bar-lounge—are each reflected in distinct melodic variations. A broad, flowing cello melody returns three times, symbolizing the grandeur of the central boulevard that stretches across the width of the building.
As the piece progresses, the atmosphere is culminating in an uplifting conclusion—mirroring the successful realization of the cultural hub and the creative energy it will inspire.
